The Black Hills, more properly known as Blackdown Hills in England, is a historic area where the Normans settled. Beyond its beauty, what I find interesting about the area is the Normans’ influence on its architecture and culture. The Church of St Peter is built in the Norman Gothic style and exemplifies both their architecture and culture.
The Normans, originally Norse Vikings who settled in the region of Normandy in northern France, famously defeated England’s King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings under the leadership of William the Conqueror. By then, Normans encompassed not only Viking and French society but also those of Africa and the Middle East, and England became a richer country because of the cosmopolitan Norman culture. The Norman dynasty in England eventually merged with the Anglo-Saxon nobility, shaping the future of the British monarchy and leaving a lasting imprint on European history.
Bengy is an old southeast English dialect word meaning “overcast” or “threatening rain.” The Black Hills’ location, north of the English Channel, means the weather can change dramatically, and Bengy is a great description of what is often known as the weather that precedes an English Rain.
Together, the area and the weather description paint a picture of a cozy experience. It’s as if you can almost feel the warmth of a crackling fire in a Victorian parlor, sharing the time with a loved one, as the Bengy weather sets the perfect mood.
